Water into Wine

A "cool glass of water" is always refreshing to a thirsty person. Without question, this is one of life's simple pleasures. A balanced diet for body, mind and soul is a basic developmental activity and instinct that is quickly learnt. Thus, personal quests to balance these basic needs or excesses according to ones' choices and availability of these items is required. To ignore the basic ingredients, aspects and elements is physically, mentally and spiritually disassociating to a persons' well-being. And sadly, the boomerang effect of extreme addictions is known to cause too many adverse effects on a person.

The modern society has learnt the good reason of organics, exercise and spiritual quests. To talk about these things is simply talking about the obvious of late. Everyone is aware of the benefits of a good diet on all areas of a persons' life. And when these basics slip away, the social services programs work towards a balanced life cycle and offers good programs to assist the way worried person. And yet, there seems to be a driving force that prevents or stalls these programs from being totally effective.

The title of this article is "water into wine." The reference is thinking about the many outreach programs that are currently working to help people. This includes the social gospel ministries that would also send workers onto the streets. The hope is to bring a "cool glass of water" etc. The social programs would provide clothing, safe lodging, a daily meal and counselling to redirect lives whenever possible. The focus is directed mostly towards body/mind and therefore, adding stability into the daily lives of the recipient. This article is thankful for the dedication of each and every outreach worker and likewise, the courage and perseverance of a person to accept help through difficult times.

The last item is the well-being of the soul. Surely, "a cool glass of water" is refreshing and soothing. These perceived helps and consciousness-raising programs are bristling with sociological stimulus and treatments. The upbeat atmosphere is electric at times and a help to encourage one-another. The people are emotionally charged and therefore, more apt to handle life's twists and turns. And at the end of the day, a little wine is "as the doctor ordered." This orderly system of activities and social programs must be repeated on a regular basis because of the one missing element. The true wine of the Spirit is eternal and more refreshing than soothing water.

The church service in most denominations have adopted the safer and respectable identity by giving the people a "cool glass of water" to satisfy the soul. This limiting spirit has permeated the worship service and created a music hall type of fellowship. To be moved spontaneously by the Holy Spirit in unorthodox manners and expressions so-to-speak are considered too disorderly. Therefore, the wine that permeates the soul is limited to smaller groups. Only to wonder why the "gifts of the Spirit" are missing and the "joy of the Lord" is muted. Rest assured, people need a balanced "sure-fire" diet, which includes the cheerful assertion of body, mind and soul.

"Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path."

The Psalmist tells us that when once in the desert they were perishing for want of water, they simply gathered in a little circle upon the burning sands and with their staves dug a little well in the sand, and lifted their voices to God in song of praise.

Immediately the waters sprang up from the depths below and overflowed again, as at Horeb and Kadesh, from the subterranean springs.

So the Rock of Ages sends its living fountains all along our way and although the desert may be all around us and the wells may seem dry, yet faith has only to make room and lift up the song of praise even in the hottest desert, and immediately the waters will spring forth in abundance, and we shall sing again.
